Big House to me is about being unapologetic in your aspirations and wanting to give back to everyone who’s supported me. There is so much I want to achieve in my life, and it’s already a tall order pursuing a career in music, so sometimes other aspects of my life take a back seat for that goal. Having relationships are hard because your priorities feel like a juggling act, I think this is something many artists feel and women especially, when they have been in long term relationships. This generation is moving away from the stereotypical roles we play in relationships, but old habits die hard. In the past I wanted to be the nurturer, feel taken care of, be independent and balance prioritising my partner. It all got a bit messy and suddenly I felt like I needed to repay someone...which is so unhealthy to bring that mindset to a partnership.
Beyond that, being a child of immigrants from a working-class background you have this idea ingrained into you that you must reach the highest goals to show thanks to your parent’s sacrifices. They never put pressure on me but being able to give back is a goal for sure. I want them to know it was all worth it. So many pop songs centre around flashy cars, big homes, and luxury but in the end the ‘Big House’ to me is just a metaphor for being financially stable and feeling like I can take care of everyone who has taken care of me.
This song is a big mash up of all my wildest dreams and you know what, I do want the big crowds and the crazy connection to strangers. That is one aspect of the song that is quite literal. I want to be huge, and I am not afraid of saying that anymore. I hope music is the path that gets me there, and that this song connects with fellow lost souls just trying to make something of themselves. Whether that is getting their dream job or reaching a small goal, nothing is too big or small to be important to you, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise
